What About Us?

My name is Margaret Wallace, my daughter Elizabeth endured severe disruption in her school life due to bullying. Through this experience, Elizabeth, my family and myself want to make a difference and create change so that no one else has to suffer like she did. As parents we tried everything we could to try and stop my daughter from being bullied. I followed the guidelines we are told to take when reporting bullying behaviour in schools.

During this time, I contacted the school and those in authority, but it made no difference. As a family, and more so my daughter, we felt let down, frustrated, scared and lonely.

Feeling this way, I came to the conclusion that I had to do something about this. There was clearly a failing in the system with having the ability to stop bullying in its tracks. I decided to give up my work and devote all of my time to this cause of starting a charity. I don’t want any child, young person or parent to suffer as we did. Change has to be the way forward to allow schools to deal with this more effectively.

Our Purpose

Prolonged bullying can have a lasting effect on a person’s mental health. It is imperative that this can no longer be allowed to happen. We see and read about new examples of this every other day.

Our purpose is to allow children and young people to have the best learning experience in an environment that is safe, reassuring and equipped to deal with bullying behaviour. We want to deliver a positive outcome for all parties involved. It is now time for change.

Our Aims

Our aim is to look at:-

  • ways in which we can improve bullying behaviour and issues in Scottish schools,
  • look at anti-bullying policies,
  • Investigate available lessons, resources and programmes to form a view as to their use and effectiveness in dealing with bullying behaviour.

We would like to equip schools with approaches that can be used consistently to tackle bullying behaviour in a way that is fair for everyone.

We realise we can’t stop bullying happening, but we hope to look at ways we can change unsociable behaviour in schools.

We are aiming to look at how we can turn negative behaviour into positive behaviour. We want to promote a friendly environment through the education process to allow children and young people to maximise their learning.

Definition of Bullying

Dictionary – “Seek to harm, intimidate or coerce (someone perceived as vulnerable)”

Wikipedia – “the use of force, coercion or threat, to abuse, aggressively dominate or intimidate. The behaviour is often repeated and habitual”

Bullying UK – “there is no legal definition of bullying. But it is usually defined as repeated behaviour which is intended to hurt someone either emotionally or physically”

Anti-Bullying Alliance – “The repetitive, intentional, hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. It can happen face to face or online”

These definitions are dominated by the word “REPEAT”. A clear pattern of ongoing behaviour. Not just a one off. A constant stream of abuse.

Gathering Evidence

We have to gather evidence to help us move our campaign forward. We need to prove that the current system is not working, and needs changed. To help with this we will be posting surveys on our website soon which we are hoping you will participate in as we need to hear your views.
